MEP MED - The Model European Parliament Mediterranean Region Programme
The Model European Parliament Mediterranean Region Programme is a non-partisan leadership programme for youth in Mediterranean countries. The aim of the MED MEP Region programme is to develop interest and skills in addressing high level international issues jointly among high-school students. The program is a training ground for future leaders and politicians.
Vision of the MEP MED region association
- Build relationships among the youth in the Mediterranean Region
- Provide an educational experience which brings together young people to discuss current Mediterranean topics in a parliamentary setting.
- Give an insight into each individual’s potential to affect society’s development, both nationally and internationally
- Develop debating skills in large international forums
- Raise political awareness and an understanding of Europe’s cultural identity and diversity.
- Educate young people about European integration and cooperation
A letter from our president
Dear Members of the Model European Parliament,
MEP Greece cordially welcomes you to Euro Med Athens 2018!
This session is being organised by the Nea Genia Ziridis MEP team along with the help of the MEP alumni, university students and the MEP organisation.
In the context of a small briefing, Greece joined the EU in 1981, raising the number of Member States to ten. Since then, Greece has always been supportive regarding every step that the EU has taken to accomplish enlargement and retain its unity. Placed on Europe’s eastern border and with its shores on the Mediterranean coastline, Greece is undeniably a valuable EU partner.
The Mediterranean Session is indispensable for it enhances regional cooperation and addresses issues that are of particular interest to the Mediterranean countries. Our region is a conglomeration of cultures and this session brings the EU motto ‘United in Diversity’ to life. For this reason, it is often said by scholars that any agreement reached among the Mediterranean countries can easily be implemented in any other region!
The agenda issues of this Euro Med session are of paramount importance for the future of the Union. The Mediterranean countries are the main stakeholders in matters concerning coast border control and the socioeconomic repercussions of mass tourism. But these will not be the only matters to be put forward. We will be given the chance to propose solutions and delve into the ways that issues like bilateral trade agreements, common agricultural policy (CAP), the scourge of youth unemployment and the migration crisis affect the whole region.
With 2018 being the European Year of Cultural Heritage, this session can have its share in reinforcing our sense of belonging in the European Union. We are positive that we will seize this opportunity to share our neighbours’ views on EU issues and represent the interests of our countries in the Committee and General Assembly sessions.
